Wearing All Black

Good day all! Last night as I was cruising Tumblr I came across someones post about wearing black on February 21st in honor of Malcolm X. So being the aspiring journalist that I am I went looking for reasons why. And Today marks the 47th anniversary of the death Malcolm X Shabazz. (I hope you allow me to preach for a second)

Yeah I know we all heard about him in school and granted it is black history month. Many people saw him (and still see him as) the opposite of what MLK stood for. But in reality Malcolm X wasn't and advocater of hate, more rather an advocater for self love, self respect, not allowing ourselves to be torn down, beat down, disrespected, and everything in between.
I think late in his life he really learned what it meant to see beyond someones skin color, to see that love does not have a color, and that in order to really and truly find that happiness, find that feeling of acceptance, we have to tear down and remove the those walls that keep us divided. Don't be afraid to befriend some who is of a different race. I speak from experience. My best friend since i was 10 years old is white, and I couldn't imagine my life without her. It's ok to open your mouth and speak to people who are different. It's ok to embrace someone beyond their stereotypical societal strengths placed on them.
Ladies it's ok to to embrace your body and be different. We curvy women, in the eyes of the fashion world are considered different, we don't fit the norm and that worries people, but that is okay because Malcolm X from the time he was born didn't fit the norm. As one of the strongest, most influential African American men to ever walk this earth he stood against the grain. Whether it was against the "white man" or those in his community that were trying to take him down. He stood against it all!

SO on today I wear all black to honor a man who taught us not to fear anyone. Who made a decision and stood by it. He was gunned down in the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem on this day in 1965

A Late Valentines

So I'm totally aware the Valentine's day was 5 days ago buuuuuut I clearly don't care lol. I wore this on Valentine's day for a date I went on. I wasn't going all out. So I stuck with all black and a splash of color and print. My new favorite leopard print wedges, and my yellow clutch I got from Fashion to Figure. The shirt I got from Forevet 21, I wore it to the IFB con. and to keep things sexy I wore the shirt without a cami underneath. I like to be daring! I think I've found my new favorite pair of black skinny jeans. They fit like a glove and are super comfortable! Thank you DOTS!

Curvy Women Dominating Magazines

It always does my heart good to she curvy/thick/plus size women on the covers of magazines. Whether its U.S. or internationally the love is universal. I don't see it as a competition with straight size women, but as the recognition in which we are due. Because we are fabulous, we do care how we look when we leave the house, we are healthy. We are moms, career women, athletes, singers, actresses, models etc.

In case you haven't seen it floating around the blog-o-sphere or your local newsstand Adele graces the cover of Vogue and does it oh so fabulously. Adele is definitely gearing up to have one hell of a year. If you disagree you clearly have been paying attention to the news, blogs, twitter, facebook around the world lol!

Beautiful on the March cover of Vogue Magazine....SHE BETTER WORK!!!

Model Robyn Lawley (whom i just love) is on the cover of Madison (Australia) I adore Robyn. She is no stranger to mainstream magazines but for this particular issue she candidly opens up about 'Deos size really matter' Noe some women would agree that Robyn isn't plus size but at a size 14-16 in the modeling world she it. But that clearly hasn't stopped her. But what I really enjoy about her is that she is healthy and curvy. She is what young girls should be looking up to. Fabulous and positive...what a great combination!

With a beautiful face and a body to match, Tara Lynn is making major moves as a plus size model. With this being her second time gracing the cover of French Elle, she is given one hell of a title..."The Body" (yup that;s right lol ) For a major fashion magazine to want to have a plus size model on their cover and hand her a title (that was previously held by Ms. Heidi Klum) she must be doing something right!

Beautiful, Curvy, & Proud at the 54th Grammy Awards

Now if for some reason you are living under a rock and didn't know that the the 54th annual Grammy awards were on last night...I need you to really get your life together lol. But any way I personally didn't watch the whole show cause it was my birthday and I had other plans. BUT I was not going to miss the fashion for the night.
I have to say that I was very please with the fashion choices of the night (most of them any way) I particularly loved Rihanna, ya'll know love her as a style icon any way. Ms. Carries Underwood was stunning in all white (yea and it's after labor day...say something about it lol) Alicia Key's looked fabulous, Taylor Swift...and the the list goes on.
But that is not what this blog is about....I know you all were itching to see what our fellow curvy women were wearing on musics big night!

So first we start with the main woman (besides Ms. Houston) of the night Adele. Beyond being excited for her first live performance, I wanted to see what should would wear. We all know she is always in black, but she just always seems to find news to make black very elegant, and not boring. I thought she look stunning in the this black number. The hair was just right...and the red lips....SHE BETTER WORK!!!

A nice surpise for me was to see singer Kelly Price. As I was poking around the internet seeing who all was in attendance, I came across ms. Kelly Price. I was like whoa!!! Where has she been? She has definitely been under the radar these last few years. She shows up all smiles in the a sparkly pink number. Not my favorite but she is still gorgeous

With the tragic news of this weekend, the Grammy's of course was not going to be the same. Rising icon Jennifer Hudson had the humble task of singing Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You as a part of the triubte to her. Now we all know that Jennifer has lost a lot of weight and is not longer "plus size" but I still love her and have to represent her!

Lastly Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum has always been on my radar, and she continues to wow me on a very suttle level. Which is why I think I adore her so much. She has a great sense of fashion, and for me she is very refreshing to see. This purple number she wore was right up my alley!

Hello all! So today February the 12th of 2012 is one awesome day....why?!?!?! Because it's MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! yay me. To bring in my day right my bestie and I went out to party at Room 84 in Hoboken, which I must say is pretty nice place. I couldnt have asked for a better night out. Drinks, dancing and a fly outfit #epicwin I had to take pics before I left the house because I knew by time I get home, nothing would look right, nor would I have the will to want to take pictures lol

Bloggers Night Out

Last night I had the awesome pleasure of attending the Bloggers Night Out event in the city. I was so excited and definitely had a good time. I must admit I was a little nervous about going to this event by myself, and I wasn't sure if I was going to have the guts to open up and talk to people. And I would people be ok with my kind of just walking up to them and saying "Hi my name is shainna" lol I wonder would they look at me crazy lo
But any who, the event was definitely well attended. It was sooooo crowed. I didn't stay very long because once I saw all the vendors and saw the people I wanted to see, it was time to go. But there were some great vendors

OPI Goes to the Ballet

Now you all know I don't normally do post about nails, or nail colors, but as I was curising twitter thes morninf I saw a tweet from Nylon Magazine about OPI's collaboration with the New York City Ballet for a line of nail colors. SAY WHAAAAAAT *stewie Griffin voice* (only family guy fans caught that lol) but anyway the world renown ballet company is the direct inspiration for this line. It is quite fascinating to see these shades of pastels in a world of bright...bold...very in your face neons.

I find in strangely erotic and interesting. I definitely may buy one or all of the colors. And seeing as how I've recently fallen in love with the movie The Black Swan (awesome movie by the way) this TOO perfect.

Colors are set to hit store shelves in April (how appropriate). But from what I've read the colors are rather chic and very classy. And they have some pretty fascinating names as well "My Pointe Exactly" (ha ha get it?!?! lol) It's the name to one of the gray tones. H&M carrying plus sizes in the States

If you haven't heard already...it has happened. H&M has launched their plus size line in select store in the U.S. yes ladies you have read that correctly. Again twitter has not let me down and I have learned through Jai one of my favorite followers that H&M in fact is selling in select stores. Now before some people get all upset questioning why is it only in select stores, Forever 21 was the same way. Only certain stores had them, and how many of you remember when it was hard to find a Torrid in a mall near you?!?!?

I think it is a great move for H&M and I'm telling you I'm already plotting and planning for this. There is a black dress that I want. As well as these fabulous mint green skinny jeans. Sadly the website does not tell you which stores have plus size. But if you're like me and end up H&M despite not being "skinny" then you'll find out all on your own!

The line is rather small, and they have a long way to go in order to have endless options like the straight size line, but it takes time. And I'm sure if we show up and show out, H&M will have no choice but to extend the line. But that are off to REALLY good start!

Continuing on for Black History Month, the next curvy woman that I adore is the amazing uncomproable Ms. Jill Scott. Now I have always been a fan of hers since I was in middle school. Her music to me, was so different. You could mellow out to her music. She always has a song that you could relate to. Whether you were mad at your man, or you wanted to shower you man with love, Jill has got your back. And to top it of she was a curvy woman that kept her head held high and is a role model for young African American girls across the country.
On top of being an amazing singer she is an actress, a philanthorpist, and the most important job of all; a mom to a very handsome little boy.

BHM; Popular Curvy Women

In school most of the time we are always learning about the popular historic figures in the black community (MLK, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks...) but for me I personally can no longe relate to these figures. My reality is I live in a world where being plus size is conisdered negative and that we all unhealthy, and in order to be successful in the entertainment industry you have to be skinny. I need someone who when I'm watching tv, or a movie she looks like me. And two young women immediately come to mind...Amber Riley and Gabourey Sidibe.

I picked these two young ladies because they are rising stars. and both are a force to reckoned with. The talent that both these young ladies possess is to never be questioned. I definitely predict to see these two young ladies 10 maybe 20 years down the road, still doing great work.

Gabourey Sidibe took the world be storm in debut role the film Precious, along side actress Mo'nique. and has bee on the radar ever since.

Amber Riely of course is most known for her role on the hit television shoe Glee, but she is quickly become a fashion icon.

Black History Month; Popular Curvy Women

Hey ladies, First let me say happy Happy Black History Month. As this is my first black history month as a blogger, I really wanted to pay homage to curvy women, fashionistas, and designers all over the world. Each week will show case a different theme.

So to kick things off, this week is all about curvy women who are thriving and working in the industry. I chose to start with this theme and these women because I feel like it's important for young girls to understand that your body weight does not have to hold you back. Regardless of how much you weigh you can be a singer, an actress, a model, and whole lot more.

for me personally, these women I do consider to be role models. More than just being curvy and successful, but they are plastered in the media in the middle of scandal. They handle themselves with class, their talents overlap, and they all come from humble backgrounds.

The first role model that I am proud to talk about is my home state favorite Queen Latifah aka Dana Owens.
(I had to come out the gate with her, as a born and raised Jersey girl myself, it's only right that I show the Jersey love.)
She needs no introductions, her career spans multiple decades, and she has been a force. From sitcoms, to box office hits, to being the face of cover girl, to having her own make up line, to showing off her sultry voice, to being one of the most respected female MC's in hip hop.
She's come a long way from her U.N.I.T.Y days, and she just keeps on rising!

I tell you I can't get enough of Queen Latifah. every time I see her on the red carpet, she blows me away. Simply because she has such confidence. As I was growing up I struggled with my weight but to she her proud, and being considered and equal, it changed my mind.

Color Block Jr.

I'm excited, I was able to take pictures outside today yyyaaaayyy!!! Ladies let me tell you, I have to give a shout out to Forever 21, because these skinnies are AMAZING. They are super comfortable and fit great. I have been on the hunt for some colored skinny jeans and when I saw these at Forever I had to try them on, and when I saw myself in the mirror I couldn't wait to buy them.
This outfit, I've had on the brain for awhile. I was just waiting for the right pieces. Orignially I wore with boots cause it is chilly up here. Its not to crazy, but I think the blue really adds to it. I paired it with my favorite white t-shirt, my "go-to" blazer I got from Lord & Taylor back when I was in high school. A leopard print scarf I found at work, and my favorite clutch from American Apparel that my bestie got me for Christmas. Tossed on my favorite watch and my favorit ring and voila!!! color block Jr. lol
I am wanting to get more into color blocking, for me now its a matter of buying the pieces.

Unfortunately I was unable to catch the SAG awards, but the first thing I did this morning was go on the hunt for the fabulous fashions that worked their way along the red carpet. And of course the curvy women are on the top of my list. To be perfectly honest I'm a little back and forth with the fashion of some of my curvy women. total #sadface

As usual who ever her stylist, is doing their job right. She looks classic, very chic, very put together and age appropriate. I don't think she's old by any means, but I enjoy that she isn't trying to compete with the other women on the carpet.

Now I have to say I'm a little disappointed with Amber's look. Usually I'm ready to snap at her and like "YOU BETTER WORK!!" but this time around all i could do is -___- but I'm sure the next red carpet she'll bounce back no worries.

I can't help but be slightly upset with Melissa's choice, its very similar to the one she wore at the Golden Globes. I am still waiting for her to really step on her box and wearing something that isn't black or nay blue, and has some what of a shorter sleeve. She's still gorgeous...I just need more.

I have to admit, I've been sleeping on Mindy. Now I know she isn't plus size but I thought this dress was so beautiful and her curves were definitely out to play. I think the off the shoulder look and the color on her skin tone is perfection. This was such a joy to see.

Terminology

Since getting into the blogging world and really seeing how plus size women are viewed, and how the movement of full figured women is getting bigger and stronger it makes me proud. but one thing that bothers me, and something that society as a whole has to work on is labels...terminology. Now yeah yeah people always say "don't let people's words bother you" but lets keep ALL THE WAY 100, how some one refers to you will make you feel some kind of way, whether it's good or bad. And we as curvy women are constantly fighting to get respect, to be seen as equal to the skinny women...the straight size women so how we are addressed means a lot to me.

Fat, chunky, big, fatshion, heavy, chubby...I can't rock with. And I'm being honest. Now for some other women, that might be okay, and I'm not knocking anyone. But me personally being called fat or any other words like that, they bring back ugly memories and come from a really dark and hurtful place. They really bring out the ugly side of me lol I consider them to be something negative, and I don't associate myself with something that is negative.

I can handle being called plus size, curvy, thick etc. I guess for me its all about the connotations that come with each word. You all know my story, when younger and somewhat into high school I was made fun of. I was called fat, fatty, fatso, fat ass, chubby, big girl. So now as an adult, words like that (in my head) come from a very dark place. I applaud females that are okay with calling themselves fat...but me....that's a no go lol

I know this is a random post, but what do you guys think? how do you feel about these labels?

Dress Up Chronicles; ProFASHIONal

#random #sidenote It took me awhile to come up with the title lol. But moving on . In the last post I told you had a rather rough night and had a mini dress up session. This outfit was yet another one of my organic outfit ideas. And as for the title, I feel proFASHIONal lol I felt super sexy but yet, rock the hell out of this outfit at my new job (which I start in February). The blue skirt I got from Forever a while ago, I'm completely in love with it, just haven't worn it as much as I would like to. I wore a simple cami underneath. and The blazer I got from the great plus size store Eddy and Bri I actually got a few things from them and I am very pleased with everything.
And my shoes I got from Just fabulous. You the website where you answer a little questionaire and they pick out shoes that you might like. I got a quite a fews picks, but these for me seem to be the most unique. I have been looking for something to wear with them.
One thing I like to do with separates like this, I like to creat a very versitile top so that way the bottom is interchangable. So I may not always wear this outfit with the blue skirt, I might pair it with simple black pants, or skinny jeans for a more professional or casual look.

Dress up Chronicles

Last night around 2 am, I was kind of recovering from a rather stressful night for very different reasons. I was sitting in bed pissed off just cruising the blogs, facebook and twitter. And as I was sitting there I was thinking about different outfits I can put together and even if I never wear them out the house, it makes me feel good. So after much debate with myself I got up and decided to play dress up. You all know playing dress is a way for me to feel better and to get my mind off what ever I'm going through. I would take pictures outside but here in Jersey its been 20 degrees and under and I kinda don't want to freeze lol.
This dress is one of the finds I found in my mother's closet. Unfortunately because its all black, you really can see all the details of the dress. But I love it. It's super soft, and the length is perfect. I think I may cut out the shoulder pads, I haven't decided just yet. The shoes you've seen before, but they were a lucky find at Payless. And the bag...the large carry all clutch from American Apparel (courtesy of my bestie) I have been salivating over since the first time I saw it own Dulce Candy's blog. I love the bold colors of the bag and the shoes together. I figured if the dress is black to keep it fun and funky I had to add color.

Monif C. giving me spring life

Now I'm like any plus size/curvy female that loves fashion. Monif C. as a clothing line is at the top of our list. I have yet to see a collection from her that I don't salivate over. But I have to say, the spring 2012 collection has me reworking my monthly budget to see if I can it to fit a Monif C. piece. Spring is all about colors and being light and airy. But this year bold colors are out to play. And in seeing what a lot of stores, and lines are doing this spring is there are really mixing bold colors together, Mixing purples and oranges, pinks and yellows, blues and greens. It really gives a new feeling to being fierce and fabulous

And of course Monif C. does her line justice by using actually curvy women as her models. Clearly this isn't anything new. But you know as well as I do that, it gives the clothing a different look and feel when you see on a young woman that looks like you, rather than a straight size woman or a manacan. You get an idea of your beautiful and curvy your body will look.

I love when outfits come together at the last minute. Like you don't plan it, it doesn't even cross your mind until it's actually time to get dressed. That tends to happen to me a lot.
This look I wore to work. And I kind if like it. It really came together organically. Granted it's not super duper chic but I was literally just picking random things. I think wearing all black with a pop of color is always a great option.

It's award season ya'll and the curvy women are out with a vengeance. It makes me so proud. It's one thing to rock a great outfit, but to see them dolled up for a night it does my heart good. Great hair, great assessories, and beautiful gowns #epicwin It goes to show that there are designers that care about the curves of women. They are making it known that we as women with a little extra in the hips, thighs, stomach, breast we can look beautiful and stand out (IN A GOOD WAY) amongst straight size women. Now this isn't about trying to be better, it's about being equal.

She looks gorgeous in white. Yea and its after labor day lol. the fabric and the cut of the dress is very age appropriate for her... shows just enough cleavage, to where it leaves some mystery but still sexy.

Now I'm always a loving fan of Amber Riley, but she is just stunning in this red number. It's great against her skin tone and the cut of the dress is just.... 2 SNAPS!!! For the women who are larger chested (see the girls can stay up lol)

Personally I'm not a fan of black long sleeve on the red carpet unless it's a mini dress. But I kind of like this look for Melissa. It's safe, and I would love to see her be a little more daring, but she still loves beautiful.

So this post is a few days late, but it was so worth it. Late Friday was my best friend's 23rd birthday. And she had her heart set on going to a club. I had no arguments seeing as how it would be my first time partying in a New Jersey club in my adult life. Again I really had no idea what I was gonna wear, and kind of threw this one together. But I really like it. Everything here you all have seen before. The cardigan I've worn before, the skirt, the booties, pretty much are a staple in most of my outfits, but i like reusing them. And yes, I wore the cardigan as a crop top, i couldn't help it, the idea of showing the hint of skin....#epicwin

Old Navy...Old Reliable

For the longest time I've had such a long love/hate relationship with Old Navy. There are some seasons when I am #teamoldnavy I practically live in Old Navy stores. It gets to the point where regardless of what town or city I'm in, I will find the closet Old Navy to shop in. lol and there are some seasons when I'm like what in the hell were they thinking?!?! lol And all I can do is shake my head, and wonder who came up with the design concept for this season. But for spring 2012 I can honestly say I am ready to spend what little bit of money I have in Old Navy.
So what I'm really enjoying is the color scheme they're working with this season. The great neutrals, the royal blues, the deep oranges, the bold colors of their dresses and skirts, the off the shoulder tops the great chucky jewelry. It was quite surprised to see the choice of colors cause I expected the normal florals and pastels, you know the usual...but nope ON was like HA! TRICKED YA LOL

Mom's Closet

It's the age old fight between mother and daughter you never see eye to eye about FASHION!!! She thinks what you're wearing is inappropriate, and you think what she's wearing is ALL THE WAY OLD, and heaven forbid you find pictures of her when she was your age...because it can go either way. You either want to snap at her and say WERK!!!!! or you want to scream and burn the picture cause you feel embarrassed by the foolishness that she wore.

Me personally I've experienced both situations. But today this post is a *2 snaps in a circle* "YOU BETTER WERK" kind of post. Being that I'm off from work today and was bored, I really wanted to go thrifting but then realized that I don't have any money #sadface I went to my moms house and something told me to just look in her closet, see what's there. Now in the last few years my mother has dropped a lot of weight, so she has loads of clothes that she can't wear any more. And they are taking up valuable space in her closet.

So I went on a little shopping spree in her closet. And came out with some really great things. Now some things do need to visit a tailor, and could use some TLC from a needle and thread, but I'm supa excited nontheless. My mission now is to stock up on some bottoms. I have a lot of tops and sweaters, but don't have many choices for bottoms. I can't be in leggings and short skirts everyday, and I need an alternative to regular blue jeans. But that's besides the point. Check out the awesome things I got from my mom's closet!!!

Aren't they great. I have sooooo many ideas that are forming. You will definitely see these items popping up in the future.

Feeling a little on the brown side

Starting my new years resolution early. I told you all that I will put more time and devotion into the blog. And for me that means I should make a point to take pictures of even the most common outfits.
So here we go, this is something simple I wore to work. Barnes & Noble isn't exactly a place to work a runway lol so I have to make the best of it. And being that I'm on my feet for 8 hours comfort needs to be a must.
The leggings and cami are basics that every girl should have in her closet. The brown shrug is from Dress Barn, I got it for Christmas from my mother's best friend. The belt is from dots and the brown boots are from Goodwill for...wait for it...$5 (well actually $4.99) but its all the same lol

NYE 2012...Bigger and Better

Hello loves Happy new year, hope you all had a wonderful holiday so the time is here, starting a new year. 2011 was an incredible year for me and I have had many many many blessings this year. For one I graduate college, set records in two field events while in school, been able to meet some great brothers from my fraternity in different parts of the country, met some awesome people at work. So of course 2012 has be bigger and better right?!?!
Most people make new years resolutions, so of course I'm compelled to do the same. A lot of people make the same resolutions every year but in thinking about it, I wanted to have some really good resolutions, and resolutions that I can actually stick with. so here we go

-Better eating habits
I already go t the gym all the time. I do my cardio, I lift, I go to zumba classes but i ruin it all by eating unhealthy stuff
-Put more effort into the blog
You know I Love you guys, but sometimes I do get lazy and don't post for a couple days. I tell myself I'm gonna do the outfit post and expand some of the things i post but then I get lazy. You all support me so much, you deserve my attention.
-Meet new people
So i love my besties, but it is time to meet other people. It's always nice to have a different set of friends to do and try different things with.
-Better money management
Let's be honest I spend so much time shopping, that by time pay day comes back around, I'm down to my last $20. that's just not cool. I can't keep living pay check to pay check. soooo yea!
-Travel
I'm 21 going on 22 in February with a college degree, this is suppose to be the best years of my life, and I'm a slave to the paycheck. don't get me wrong I'm blessed to even have a job, but I want to see the world, and I'm gonna work my hardest to explore this world the God created.

hey hey hey...After shifting through my post (im joning the banwagon) I have picked my favorite looks from this year. Surprisingly enough it wasn't hard. and I pretty sure I know which one you guys loved lol you made in very clear! This blog is only 9 months old but I'm so in love with it. It has really forced me to step on my comfort zone. Wearing crop tops, being super okay in short shorts etc. You all really keep me going, because I as I shop now, when I have a certain item in my hand, the first thing I think about is how can I make this different, how can I be creative so I can post it. So many of you young women are just SOOOOO creative and can put together an outfit almost effortlessly, and it makes me salivate lol. I want to step up my game for you guys. You set the bar and I want to do my best to reach it!

Christmas dress at a christmas party

First let me preface this by saying that I hope you all know how much I love you, Cause I froze me blogger fingers off in 40 degree weather to take these pictures lol. Like Trey Songz sad "tell em that I do it, tell em that I do it for ya'll, for ya'll, for ya'll"

buuuut anyway, can I tell you all just how much I love this dress. This is the perfect case of sometimes you just have to try things on. I saw this dress on Fashion to Figure's website and I thought it looked horrible. Then when I went shopping, I saw it in the store and I was like okay it's not so bad. BUT when I tried it on...it was a wrap, I just had to buy it.
I was never really a fan of one shoulder dresses (on me at least) but I absolutely adore this dress. The length (I love) and the gray and gold mixture is great for the holiday season. I wore this dress to a Christmas party I went to last night. At first I thought I would be a little too over dressed, but I felt amazing in the dress all night. It was flattering, it fit great...what more could I ask for.

Now let's talk about the shoes...the shoes...THE SHOES HONEY...oh the shoes. So during my little shopping trip to find my dress, I randomly wandered into a shoe store. I was on the hunt for black pumps (it's quite sad that I don't own a pair of black pumps) I finally settled on these. On the front they seem normal, but when you look at the back of the heel...SURPRISE!!!

They are super sexy and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I kept the jewelry and things very simple because I wanted the dress and shoes to speak for themselves.

Her Royal Flyness

A lot of ladies always ask me where do I get my inspiration from. And a lot of times I just scratch the surface. But to be honest I grab my inspiration from so many places. Of course other blogs dedicated to curvy women. Tumblr (i mean who doesn't get inspired by Tumblr), fashion magazines, but really my inspiration is very much stereotypical. A lot of it comes from celebrities and models (yup straight size women). some of my favorite fashion icons are Rihanna, Cassie, Zoe Saldana, and Solange, just to name a few. When ever I see them in something that I like, I go into shopping mode. I either end up at the mall or I go shopping in my closet because I'm trying to find my own spin on what they have.

Clearly you all know I'm gonna find the budget friendly version, and tweaking it to fit my body. I look at women like Chanel Iman and salivate...not cause I wanna be her body size, but cause 9 times out of 10 I want the bag on her arm or the shoes on her feet.

I do follow quite a few straight size fashion blogs, because I am infatuated with how these women put outfits together. You all know I don't let my body dictate what I wear. I'm always trying something different. I think that's what fashion means to me. Being inspired, feeling good in what you're wearing.

Yes I am on #teamdereon I am quite proud of Beyonce and her line Dereon. I usually don't really care for urban lines, because they're always gaudy and sometimes just straight up ugly. But today as I was out shopping for a christmas party I'm going to this weekend, I stopped in a random shoe store. I was looking for some black pumps. because I realized I own no black pumps (crazy right!!!) but anyway, just as I was about to give up hope, I saw the quilted black pumps with the Deron symbol. They're actually nice in person. AND THEY HAD THEM IN MY SIZE #EPICWIN.
The store I was in happen to have more of her pumps so I tried on a few. and fell in love with all the ones I tried on. I ended up buying the first ones in the pic above. They seem plain but they have a nice surprise on the heel. You will see more about them when I do the outfit post about my Christmas look.
I think what I enjoy about these shoes is that they are completely covered with the symbol of Dereon. She could have very well made them all sparkly with all kinds of colors and chains and hooks and what not lol I like that she kept them simple but still very much Bey's style!

So it is the time of the year folks are throwing their holiday parties. Matter fact I myself have a party to go to this coming Saturday (Dec. 3rd) And that means finding fabulous dresses to wear. Now you all know me, short, sparkly and colorful! But holiday partys allow for an extra sexy dress that still have a family friendly side. That's why I love shopping for holiday dresses. It's one thing to shop for a dress to go to the club in. I mean anything short or with an extremely plunging neck line, isn't hard to come by. But a dress to wear to a christmas party or the oh so exciting new years parties, that's the best part. I'm quite excited to look for a great dress. Outfit Pick Me Up

So today started of miserable. I spent most of the morning trying to figure out how I'm going to pay off my student loans. And that process in and of itself really drained me and gave me a serious reality check on life. I spent quite some time being upset about the whole situation. I knew paying back student loans would break the bank, but not this much. I need the Lord to step in asap. Because I'm not sure what I can do at this point. So what better way to make myself feel better than to dress up and take pictures.
I've had this outfit in my mind for a couple weeks now. It was a matter of me putting it together. It actually came together better than I thought it would. I love it. There's an indescribeable feeling you get when an outfit really works for you. oh and you have to see the most adorable geeky robot necklace that I got the other day...isnt he the cutest thing ever?!?!?!

Amen to Leopard

OK OK I know I haven't posted in about a week. But lately work keeps me busy and I really haven't been inspired to really but together an outfit. Well at least put together an outfit that you all haven't seen before. But I'm trying to get my life together with this post. I wore this outfit to church yesterday. My dance ministry was dancing so I was very important that I make it to service to watch them worship. I very rarely make it to church cause I work Sunday mornings. But any way this is what I came up with. Kept it very simple but want to feel slightly feisty with the leopard print cardigan.

I got the cardigan this past saturday when me and the besties went shopping. We literally had a shoping day. We spent a good 5 to 6 hours in the mall. (a real girl's shopping day) We havent been able to shop like that in a long time cause I work a lot, my bestie just got a job at Urban Outfitters, and th elife of working in retail has its down sides. Buuuut moving on the entire outfit was relatively inexpensive...and you know I love a fierce inexpensive outfit. And yes I like to praise the Lord in style

Navy for the Interview

So I know you all are wondering. I have an interview for a media agency on Thursday, and I don't believe in following the typical standards for going to inteviews. I don't want to be in a boring gray or black suit. I like to have fun and feel great in what ever I have on. So THANK GOD for things like Polyvore, because the ideas that run wild in my mind, allow me to play virtual dress up. When I was at the gym, this is what I came up with. An aline skirt, a simple white button up, a navy blue blazer, leopard print belt black wedges and a blue bag.
Now of course you know I would want to find the cheaper versions of all of these. buuuuut you get the point. So I will be trying my best to put this outfit together. I am on the hunt for pretty much all of these items.
But about my interview....I will be interviewing for Zenith Media, they do mostly media buying and what not. And deal with a lot of big name brands. They have a 3 month rotaional training program, with a possibility of job placement after the program. I really want this. I pray to God this comes through for me. Lord knows I need this. This could help me career wise as well as help the blog.

A Sunday in a Dress & Boots

I had a really good weekend...actually a rather dope a** weekend. Some friends from college were in town so we went partyting in the city. It was actually my first time in a New York City club. Happy Halloween...In Living Color

SO i had a rather laid back Halloween. I was actually off from work. But I still wanted to enjoy the day. I went to dinner with my besties, and we all wore our costumes. My best friend Kelsey was mickey mouse and my other best friend was a marienet doll. and me...well I was a Fly Girl from the hit sketch comedy show In Living Color. For those who don't remember the show, it was pretty much where JLo back when she was still Jennifer lol she was one of their dancers. I really loved the fly girls cause they did real choreography. They don't do that very often any more.
So my costume was pretty much last mintue but I'm totally ok with that seeing as how it came together very well. As you can see I have 'In living color' on the front. on the back I actually have 'Fly Girl Shay' but it was too cold to take a lot of pictures without my jacket. In case you didn't know living in Jersey (at this time of the year) is quite cold. and we're still trying to get over the freak snow storm that came through here this past saturday.
The most exciting part of my costume is my earrings. I made them myself. I had these earrings on my mind for a good week now, and to see them come to life makes me soooo happy. definitely will be making more!

For those who don't know I work at Barnes & Noble and today we Joel Osteen giving a book signing. And it was a rather large crowd of people. So I wanted to look good. I did a post about a month ago about Gisela Ramirez an Australian plus size designer. and how I just Purchased one of her crop tops that says F*CK FLATTERING. I really haven't had many places to wear cause I work all the time and I'm sure Barnes & Noble would not be happy with that. So today on my day off I made a point to take some pics of the top.
In case you all didn't know I have an obsession with leggings. These are my favorite basic black leggings. The belt I got from Catherine's, and it is slowly becoming one of my favorite belts. The booties are from torrid. I did wear the top once to a party I went to, and got a few laughs and complements about the top. So thumbs up to that.

Standing Against Bullying

So this post is supa important and personal to me. If you did not know, October is also anti-bullying awareness month. Bullying is such a huge issue that our kids have to deal with everyday in schools. And it is beginning to make its way the workplaces, and adults are being picked on, bullied, and laughed at.

As someone who was made fun of when I was younger, when I see others being bullied it really breaks my heart, because it brings me back to when I was 10. I had to learn to look beyond the bully. and know that I am beautiful. Just because I'm different doesn't give anyone the right to laugh at my expense. And now-a-days the term "kids can be cruel" has been taken to a whole new level. They're taking things beyond the school hallways and playgrounds, and taking it to the internet. Verbally abusing others on facebook or myspace or through email. It's disgusting.

It is not enough to tell your kids to ignore the bully. It's not enough to just tell a teacher. Things like that are needed (don't get me wrong) but we need to keep motivating our kids, helping them to gain more confidence in themselves. Bullys are nothing new, but it doesn't make it okay.

And for the adults that are picked on at work or even in college, one I think that is just stupid, cause to be a bully when you're ALL THE WAY grown just says something about your character and your life is CLEARLY jacked up. But I would say to those of you who are victims of bullying, don't let their words dictate your actions or how you feel about yourself. I know that it is easier said than done. But if you love yourself and you know you are worth something, then take what they say with a grain of salt. To this day I am still laughed at and talked about...but no one will dare come to my face and say anything crazy. And even if they did, I probably would laugh at them for waisting their time even talkin to me. buuuuuut that's just me.

So I made this outfit on polyvore because I myself didn't have time to put together an actual outfit and I really wanted to represent for anti-bullying. Purple is the color and I thought what better way to stand against foolishness than to rock and awesome outfit, that enhances your fierceness and your confidence.

So I was cruising the blogs and I saw a Dorothy Perkins post on Stylish Curves, and I as i was looking through the dresses on the website, I saw this great Ponte Dress. If I could afford it I would so buy and this is the idea of an outfit that I had in mind. I love that the dress is very simple. Not much to it. But this is when we can great creative. I do believe that not everything has to match. as long as it "goes together" I say wear.
And in case you haven't noticed I love color. Part of me wanted to put a colored belt on but I felt like that was to much witht the shoes and bag. Maybe if I was doing all black shoes and bag then a colored belt would be perfect....(but i digress)
Im really into spiked jewelry. I'm planning to do a couple DIY earrings. I figure it will be super easy, but will make a world of a difference. The ring when i saw in online I just had to add to the outfit. I can't afford it but its nice to look. Right?
And the lipstick, as a women of color, for the longest time I was afraid of colored lipstick, but recently I have been rockin my pink and red lipstick, and I want to get really daring with this color.

Yes ladies, I'm telling you we are moving up in the world every single day. Now for those of you who are not familiar with The Limited, its is a brand that catered to mostly straight size women, but it is known for putting out very trendy but chic clothing for the grown woman.

Omg...Omg...omg I have been waiting to do this post for the longest time. Since I got everything, i have been meaning to make an outfit. My harem pants are from Asos Curve, my shoes are from Aldo and my shirt is from a designer Cielo. So today when I had some time I got dressed, and fell in love with the outfit. To be honest I almost returned the pants cause when I got them in the mail, they didnt tickle my fancy like I thought they would. But after letting them marinate on the brain, I figured there has to be an outfit I can rock with this. And this is what I came up with.

I've been meaning to post this outfit for quite some time. But then my charger desides to die on me. But now that I got some time here it is. I wore this outfit to work, and the outfit itself was quite inexpensive. The shirt itself I got for $16 that was originally $88 (2 thumbs up) Lately I've been wearing my hair in a high messy bun. One cause it's easy to do, and two cause I'm being lazy and dont want to retwist my hair. I felt super cute. I lovethis outfit. If you didn't know I work at Barnes and Noble. We can wear anything besides blue jeans. Some of my co-workers say I have the most fashion sense. Its flattering but hey just cause I work in a book store doesn't mean I can look cute. Yes, yes, yes, ladies you read the title correctly. I just received a new crop top and its says F*ck Flattering. It is from the collection of plus size Australian designer and blogger Gisela Ramirez. I've been following her blog and the evolution of her clothing line for quite some time. When I say she gives me life...honey! THE GIRL GIVES ME LIFE!!! LOL I'm so serious.

Her tumblr is on of the reasons why I began to blog and she really is an advocate for positive body image and confidence. She is all about loving yourself. And her style is right up my alley. She lets you know that you dress yourself and your body to feel good about yourself. And not to please others. Hints the phrase F*ck Flattering. Wear what you love and feel good in. Not what the world expects you to wear.
She gave me courage to start wearing crop tops, ya'll know I love me a crop top. I'm planning a trip to Australia in a couple of years, if I go, I'm definitely looking her up.

Now I know for some people the idea of walking around with F*ck Flattering across their chest is a little too much. And I know when I wear this shirt I'm probably gonna get a lot of stares and maybe some snickers or people will be talking about me behind my back. But hey I've been getting that all my life so that's nothing new for me. OH WELL LOL.

If I had the money I would buy so many other things from her line cause they are truly amazing. I was quite excited when I ordered the shirt because 1. it was coming from Australia and 2. I'm supporting one of my favorite bloggers. I'm telling you, you should've seen my face when I got the package. I was giddy (don't judge me ya'll lol) and I applaud Gisela for the timely shipping. I literally got my shirt in one week. and that's one thing I look for in online companies/designers.

Curvy Women work the Emmy's

Gloria Devine Amber Riley and Melissa McCarthy did us proud at the 2011 63rd Emmy Awards on Sept. 18th. The fashion was great and congratulations to Melissa McCarthy for winning best comedy actress! All three young women looked fabulous and were able to hold their own the red carpet. What I love about the Emmy's as a home view is seeing the celebrities walk the red carpet: polished, clean and elegant. I love to see the gowns from designers like Armani Prive, Monique Lluillier, Zac Posen and the list goes on.

The representation of plus size/curvy women continues to grow. But when I see women like these three hold their heads up high, and just exude confidence it does my heart good. They are honored for their work in television and film and not for their weight #love

I normally don't do OOTD's but I was kinda feelin this outfit. Its really simple, but you know what they say, less is more! And I have been waiting to wear this blazer I got from Torrid. When I saw it own the rack I just had to have...and it was on SALE!!! A girl loves a good sale. I was finally off from work, and my mom wanted to make a trip to the mall, so I took that opportunity to get dressed.

New MTV series; Chelsea Settles | Trailer

I'm not sure just how I feel about this show just yet. I probably will have to actually give the show a chance. The one thing I'm worried about is that MTV is further perpetuating the plus size stereotype. you know the one; we're big, plus size, pretty face, have ambitions and aspirations, but we have low self esteem and think we aren't worth anything. REALLY!?!?!?

Can we get a girl trying to reach her goals with confidence. Where we don't have to watch a sob story about a plus size girl who hasn't found ways to love her self? Mtv I applaud you for taking a risk and stepping out on faith by doing a show about a plus size girl, but I'm mean really, way to set use back another 20 yrs.

Getting dress the morning of the conference was...talk about organic. I had no idea what I was going to do with my hair. I curled it the night before and I hated it. but last minute i did a quick little updo and LOVED IT!

he glasses were a last minute thing as well. I was getting ready to walk out the door when I say them on my dresser, i put them on and it was lik YYYEEESSS *2 snaps* lol
I kept the make up and accessories really simple because I wanted the outfit to speak for itself.

And the shoes....lol the shoes, the shoes, the shoes They were a real hit which was not what I was expecting. When I saw this shoes at payless I just had to have the. The issue is, they are a size ten. in the store only left foot was able to fit in the shoe. The band that comes over the top of my foot was cutting off all kinds of circulation lol. So when I got home and thought about it, I cut the top part open. I made all kinds of attempts to fix it and make the shoe look better. but while at the conference i left them juSt cut open and every loved them! yup my shoes were a DIY. POW!!!

IFB Conference...Couldn't ask for anything better

I don't even know where to begin! This past Tuesday Sept. 7th was the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference, and I can honestly say I had a blast, and walked away inspired. When I arrived, I was a little shy, just walked around, waved, smiled at some people. I was rather overwhelmed. I didn't know where to even start.

I was given a goody bad (which I have yet really go through lol) There was manicures, and Magnum ice cream, Aldo Rise was in the building, giving out prizes, Marina was in the house and for those of you who don't know Marina, you will!

we started around 9:45 or so with the first Panel discussion. and every one was set, people had their tablets, Ipads, laptops, and some took it old school with good fashion pen and paper taking notes on what the panel list were saying. As a relatively new blogger I felt like the panelist was talking directly to me. Really understanding what and why i blog. Really understanding branding myself as a blogger.

Each panel discussion lasted about an hour and a 1/2. The facilitator would pose some questions allowing for the panelist to really open up. And then open up questions to the audience. all the panelist were honest, helpful and kept it real with us. letting us know that every1's blogging experience will not be the same, but never underestimate the content we put out there.

There was a lot of discussion about the place bloggers have in the fashion world. Where we stand? Do we make a difference? How to remain relevant?

In between each panelist discussion, there was a nice break, we good grab something to drink (shouts out to Vita Coco) we could grab ice cream courtesy of Magnum! And the best thing free Bobble water bottles. which I must say is an awesome little thing!

Around 12:30 lunch was served. As always we took the time to take pictures, collect and give out business cards (which by the end of lunch, I had ran out lol) I must say the fashion in that room was incredible. I felt like I actually fit in because I felt like everyone had really put time and effort into what they wore. and it was so refreshing to see the shoes, the skirts, the jackets the hair, the make up...UHHHH IT GAVE ME LIFE lol I will actually do a separate post on the outfits and the bloggers I met!

After the last panel discussion, we had an hour break to leave, and grab coffee or some food, cause we had been there pretty much all day, we took full advantage of that. I grabbed lunch with three great bloggers (had a great bowl of fettuccine lol) and to end a great night sitting down listening to Creative Director of Elle Magazine Joe Zee!

Ya'll let me tell you, I think everyone in that room was hanging on his every word. He opened up about his life, his schedule, his takes on the blogging world, his reality show, give tips and advice. He was so down to earth and talked to us like he would talk to his peers. Talking TO us not AT us, which made me really want to listen to him, cause I felt like he understood the place that a lot of bloggers were and where we were trying to go.

I met so many great men and women. It was such a blessing to be among people that love fashion, that love blogging, and that real about what they do. Sure everyone is at different points in their blogging career, some have years under their belt, some a few months. everyone had different demographics, we were all different in age, but that day as chilly and rainy as it was, we were all the same. celebrating what we love to do. If you missed it, you missed one hell of a day!

Fashion Night Out NYC!

So to add to my amazing week I went out on the town for Fashion Night Out. I'll be doing a post about the IFB Conference soon, so be on the look out fot that. I got even more excited to see/ know that all of the bloggers I met were preparing for FNO and looking for the perfect outfit to travel the great city of New York to attend all the great events and parties that was happening all over the city.
I waited all week for this night, the minute I got off work, I ran home got dressed and headed for the city. I had planned on going to the Avenue, L&T, Macy's, DVF, Betsy Johnson, and JCPenny.

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to all my stops, but I was able to make it to the Avenue, Lord & Taylor, Macy's and Sephora on 34th st. But due to me having to work I got in to the city rather late and didnt get to see everything i had planned on seeing. That sucked buuuuut the up side is,

At my first stop I headed to The Avenue on Third ave. I got to see Brooke Elliot from Drop Dead Diva! The Avenue was crowded but still great to she The Avenue's fall collection. I see they are really trying to be more fashion forward for plus size women. so 2 thumbs up to the Avenue

From there I walked to 39 st. and fifth ave to Lord & Taylor which was my best spot. Not only was I able to see the beautiful Solange Knowles L&T had so much going on. on Every floor there was something going on. music, drinks, fotobooth, a meet and greet, lil trinkets. it was all around very interactive and thats what I loved. I wish i did get there earlier but hey, things happen. But I was there for a good hour and some change and checked out every floor. and of course seeing Solange, (who is so gorgeous in person) she was djing playin some great old school hit! Shout out to Solange

From there, I made my way to Macy's 34th street. Which i am sad to say did not meet my expectations. So I have nothing to say about Macy's. sooooo moving on.

I headed across the street to Sephora which was still jumpin! I'm usually not a fan of Sephora because I can't handle all the smells and fragrances. But the music was still bumpin, and they had a photobooth! I took a photo with some random chick. I think she worked there. She was fierce and her makeup was on point! so i have no complaints.

and on my way to the train station, I stopped in Swarvoski. There wasn't much going on but I love Swarvoski. They had the usual some good music, champagne, and the cutest little red velvet cupcakes that had eatable red glitter and eatable pearls! yes! *2 snaps*

and that ended my #FNO experience. I must say I had a blast. and to see what I wore check check check it out!

"MAKE IT WORK" Tim Gunn made this phrase oh so popular, but in fashion it is all about making things work for you. I'm a shopaholic but don't have the budget to afford the finer things that I would love. So I'm always on the hunt for similar items that alot less pricey.

So in the process of shopping for my IFB conference putfit (which is complete btw) my mind kept circling around possibly splurging on a Cambridge Satchel. I did a post on the neon satchel, but I am also loving the vintage satchel. But in the midst of my shopping happen to look on H&M's website and found the perfect satchel, that not only gave me the feel of the true Cambridge Satchel, but is was budget friendly.
